The Gerard Medal

The Gerard medal was established in 1991 by the Canadian Geophysical Union - Hydrology Section's Committee on River Ice Processes and the Environment to recognize and remember the contributions made to the field of river ice engineering by the late Dr. R. (Larry) Gerard.  The medal is awarded to the author(s) of the paper deemed to be the best amongst those presented at each of the biennial River Ice Workshops that are sponsored by the committee.

Dr. Gerard was a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta

and was recognized world-wide for his contributions in River Ice Engineering.

In Sept 2011  the Gerard Medal was awarded to Faye Hicks, Robyn Andrishak, and Yuntong She for their paper:

Hicks, F., Andrishak, R. and She, Y. (2009) “Modeling Ice Cover Consolidation during Freeze-up on the Peace River, AB”. Proc. 15th CGU-HS CRIPE Workshop on River Ice. pp 237-252.

In Sept 2005  the Gerard Medal was awarded to Twyla Kowalczyk and Faye Hicks for their paper:

Kowalczyk, T.and Hicks, F. (2003) “Observations of Dynamic Ice Jam Release on the Athabasca River at Fort
